The purpose of your initial visit is to explore how your pain is affecting your quality of life and to figure out ways to reduce your pain while improving your ability to enjoy your life. We help our clients by teaching about chronic pain and the body, coaching on strategies to fulfill life responsibilities without causing your pain to become intolerable, and helping you learn coping skills to better deal with your pain. We also help our clients with stress and emotional issues as these intensify pain which then causes more suffering and disability. Pain and stress are intimately related where pain causes stress, and stress, in turn, causes more pain.
Chronic pain, unfortunately, is all too prevalent and affects about 20% to 30% of the adults in Western countries. And, just about every area of one’s life is usually compromised or affected by their pain for a significant amount of time. What we know to be true in the chronic pain field is that by combining behavioral health strategies with the medical strategies people’s pain levels tend to be decreased while their quality of life and ability to participate in desired areas of life are increased. We understand that the pain is real and that the problems caused by the pain affects the whole person.
I use a wide array of approaches that are focused on each individual’s needs and wants. The therapy can be short term or longer term, depending on the client’s needs. Living with chronic pain requires considerable emotional resilience that over time becomes depleted and increasingly burdens not only the pain sufferer but also the significant others’ who struggle with ways to support their loved one. As a result, behavioral health assessment and intervention has become the gold standard in chronic pain treatment.
